What is a tariff code?
A tariff code (also called a HS code or harmonisation code) is a unique classification number used worldwide to identify specific types of products for import and export purposes.
Customs authorities use these codes to decide:
What type of goods you’re sending
What level of import duty and tax should apply
How tariff codes work
Tariff codes are maintained by the World Customs Organization (WCO).
Every code contains at least 6 digits and can be extended to up to 10 digits for more specific product descriptions.
Example:
“Shoes” may be classified under a 6-digit code
“Leather shoes” may have an 8-digit or 10-digit code for greater precision
Why they matter
Using the correct tariff code ensures:
Customs apply the right charges
Your parcel isn’t delayed or stopped for manual inspection
You avoid paying incorrect or higher import duties
How to find your product’s code
Most Customs authorities provide online search tools to help you identify the right tariff code and check the applicable import duty and tax rate.
